Social Determinants of Health

SDOH are the nonclinical factors that affect the health status, or physical, social, and personal characteristics of populations in which they live. These determinants are important in the determination of general health and come as a basis for health differences observed in different groups of the population. Priority SDOH areas are economic stability, education, healthcare, physical environment, and social relations and community.

Housing is about affordable houses; health is about being able to afford and access healthy foods and/or necessary healthcare; and economic stability is about uncertainty, stability, or instability in the earnings of people. Education influences one's health literacy and economic prospects hence their future overall health. The endpoints of the built environment, such as places of green and clean, safe neighborhoods, also influence the health of individuals significantly on the physical and mental health of individuals. Social networks and social support give out meaningful commodities for dealing with stress and maintaining mental health.

The two are health inequalities which occur when groups of people do not have access to dep arts that promote healthy living because of the level of wealth they possess, color, or area of residence. For example, those residing in poor-quality areas may have no access to quality health facilities; the community may lack quality food stores; or high risk of exposure to hazardous environmental conditions. These inequalities therefore result in a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, low life expectancy, and poor healthy lives among the affected people.

Strategies aimed at managing SDOH involve a concerted effort with healthcare workers, policy-makers, teachers, and other professionals, as well as advocates of community interests in order to develop supportive policies, as well as fair distribution of various resources among the populace. They aim to enhance conditions by promoting livelihood, housing, education, health, and other community-based systems. Coping with underlying reasons for health disparities, the use of SDOH nurtures stronger and more sustainable societies in which everyone is provided with the necessary elements for a healthy and, thus flourishes.
