Public Health Nursing is one of the subfields of professional nursing that works with the care and education of communities and provides preventive health services. Public health nursing on the other hand focuses on population health reviews and is best described as proactive care to an entire population, focused on achieving better nursing health in the target population despite their health status, minority status, or disability status.
They are administrative in the diagnosis of health needs and initiating and executing community health interventions as well as providing community health promotion by offering community health promotions such as immunization, prevention of diseases, and health promotion. They thereby eliminate health inequality, promote the provision of antecedent care, and build community-friendly cultures for enhanced health. Public health nurses empower patients, families, and groups on matters of health including healthy diet, exercise, mental health, and avoiding diseases caused by substance use. It enables individuals in a given society to make the right decisions in cases of disease and illness prevention and minimize disease prevalence.
To work effectively with families, schools, and the community, public health nurses work with local health departments, schools, and organizations to such facets of life as healthcare insurance, housing, and finances. Such an approach is critical in developing and growing healthier communities and health equity. Public health nurses are at the forefront during health calamities such as when the transmission of diseases like COVID-19 is high and offering care, passing information, and participating in risk management during emergencies.
Widely recognized today as a crucial cornerstone of public health, illuminating population health, incentivizing the public’s health literacy, and providing a safety net of primary healthcare, public health nursing integrates clinical practice competencies with community nursing practice.
